THE BUZZ: WipEout 2048 has been priced and is scheduled for release just four weeks after the Playstation Vita goes on sale in Japan. Perennial japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (via Siliconera) has reported that Wipeout 2048 is racing to the PSVita on January 19, just about a month after Sony’s handheld debuts on December 17. The game is priced at 4,980 yen with a downloadable version available for 3,900 yen.
EGM’S TAKE: It seems that whenever Sony releases a new console they have a stable of franchises they like to dip into, to show off the console’s horsepower. WipEout 2048 is a great candidate for such a task. It’s colorful, fast, and easy to show off to friends. Word of mouth is an important tool for Sony right now.
With lingering questions of whether dedicated handhelds are slowly becoming obsolete, and Nintendo getting Capcom to release Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS, Sony needs PSVita’s in gamers hands. Nothing sells a game better than watching over a stranger’s shoulder on public transportation, swearing you could do better.
