EGM’s Top 25 of 2011
Part 1: #25 – #21

Posted on December 19, 2011 AT 05:26pm

2011’s been an epic year for gaming. Both sequels and original titles alike were more than worthy of the triple-A moniker, but which were the best? After a bare-knuckle, drag-out fight in the EGM conference room, a list emerged deciding just which of these games were the crème de la crème. Six men entered. Twenty-five games came out.

#25: Corpse Party

Publisher: XSEED Games
Developer: Team GrisGris/5pb
Why It Made The List: Corpse Party was one of 2011’s most shocking games—not only in terms of its brutality, engrossing storyline, and character depth, but also in how it presented us all of those things so effectively via retro visuals and gameplay. Corpse Party is a perfect reason to dust off your PSP—or a perfect way to break in your shiny new Vita when it launches early next year. – Eric L. Patterson

#24: Battlefield 3

Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: DICE
Why It Made The List: Signaling EA’s intent to take the FPS genre by storm, Battlefield 3 comes equipped with the Frostbite 2 engine—which, frankly, makes it one of the best-looking games of the current hardware generation. Combine this with an immersive, action-packed multiplayer component, and you’ve got yourself one helluva ride. With well-balanced classes and hundreds of hours of content, this one will be in your 360, PS3, or PC for a long time to come. – Matthew Bennett

#23: Saints Row: The Third

Publisher: THQ
Developer: Volition
Why It Made The List: If Grand Theft Auto brings gritty storytelling to the sandbox, then Saints Row offers the fun and crazy toys—and a lot of ’em, too. How many games let you spawn a fighter jet from thin air, fly to your objective, parachute out, and then watch it smash into the nearest pedestrian before calmly continuing on with your mission? Hint: The answer is none. – Matthew Bennett

#22: Persona 2: Innocent Sin

Publisher: Atlus
Developer: Atlus
Why It Made The List: Lost to North America for over 12 years, Persona 2: Innocent Sin and its engrossing storyline, deep gameplay, and well-written cast of characters still felt as fresh in 2011 as they no doubt did back in 1999. Though at times unforgivingly difficult, Innocent Sin’s still a journey more than worth taking. – Eric L. Patterson

#21: inFAMOUS 2

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Sucker Punch Productions
Why It Made The List: Comic-book hero Cole MacGrath thrilled us in the first inFAMOUS, but we never imagined that he’d move to New Orleans—er, New Marais and get all powered up. Cole’s new abilities emphasized the importance of choice: You could become a badass whether you chose to be good or bad, and whether you wielded fire or ice, you felt like you’d just jumped out of a graphic novel—an exhilarating ride start to finish. – Marc Cameron

A solid list of games, to be certain, but which titles managed to beat them out on the path to our Game of the Year? Only time will tell. Be sure to check back tomorrow for part two of our Top 25, featuring EGM’s picks for #20 – #16!
