EGM Weekend Play: In The Dead of Space

Welcome to EGM’s Weekend Play, a weekly account of what games the editors of EGM are currently playing, and an open conversation with you, the reader, about what you’ve been playing.

After reading what we’re playing, let us know what games you’ve been playing and what games, if any, you’ll be escaping to this weekend in the comments below!

As everyone in the office knows, I’ve been anticipating Etrian Odyssey IV’s arrival for some time—and I’m still waiting, alas. Until it comes, then, I’m going to put some more time into Fire Emblem: Awakening. Ray may have fallen for the enigmatic dark mage Tharja, but who will win my heart? The spunky healer, Lissa? The academic, bespectacled sorceress, Miriel? The tsundere troubadour, Maribelle? Stay tuned!

Thanks to a stock replenish, I’ve finally managed to get a copy of Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch—it actually sold out across the U.K.—so my weekend is pretty much going to be taken up by that. I’m looking forward to seeing why everyone is going so crazy about the game. The graphics look absolutely beautiful–I just hope the gameplay can match up to them.

I’ll also be spending a little more time with my completely modded version of Skyrim. Those of you who don’t have it on PC, I highly recommend that you invest in it. What the modding community has done for that game is unbelievable; it basically becomes a whole new experience. Just download and install a couple of mods and you won’t believe you’re still playing the same game.

So, did I get the chance to dig into Dragon’s Dogma last weekend? Haha—of course not. Unfortunately, it also won’t be happening this week either. I was tasked with reviewing one of this week’s major releases—Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2—but then I came down with some sort of death illness that knocked me out cold for most of the week.

Thus, my weekend of gaming will be spent bringing violent justice to the outlaws of a post-apocalyptic world. When not playing that, I’ll no doubt be spending more time with everybody’s current favorite, Fire Emblem: Awakening. I’m getting to the point where my characters are just about to start wedding one another en-masse, and I’m finding far too much joy in playing virtual matchmaker.

The hold that Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has on me is frightening. I still play whenever I can squeak out some free time, which I hope to have this weekend. But now, other games are beckoning me to jump in, chief among them Dead Space 3. There are beasties to kill in space, and that’s always a big draw. I still haven’t beaten DmC: Devil May Cry, so that is hanging over my head like a scythe. And then there’s the matter of Fire Emblem: Awakening. I’m almost reluctant to start that one, since it could directly compete with Ni No Kuni for my free time. More games are on the way, so it’s time to get serious! That stadium buddy is starting to sound like a good idea.

After poring over every inch of my massive gaming collection, I’ve come to realize that there are only two titles that I’ve yet to touch: Kinect Star Wars and the Burger King promotional game Big Bumpin’. Normally, I’d take that as a sign that I should spend the weekend doing something out in the real world, but now that I’m shackled to this Weekend Play business, I guess I’ll have to dance along to a terrible Han Solo–themed song parody while the last lingering vestiges of my happy childhood flicker out into nothingness. Thanks, guys.

Earlier this week, I started playing Mass Effect 3 again. Not entirely sure why. I was in the mood for firefights, but not necessarily in the mood for a modern day military shooter. Plus, I have yet to see the game’s updated ending.

This time I’m playing as a Sentinel. About nine or ten hours in so far, on my way to the Citadel to save the day. I hope to tear a nice chunk out of the game this weekend, ’cause next week I need to start focusing on more recent releases, such as Dead Space 3.

Maybe after all the time I spend in space between the two I’ll want to come back down to Earth—perhaps with Black Ops 2. I’ve also been playing Special Forces: Team X, and that has me jonesin’ for a proper online shooter to escape to at night.
