Posted on December 28, 2012 AT 07:55am

As we say goodbye to the year that was 2012, the EGM crew looks ahead to 2013, and five of our most-anticipated releases for the new year. Of course, these aren’t the only games we can’t wait to get our mitts on over the course of the next twelve months—but they’re five games we think will have a major impact on our hobby  in 2013.

Have a game—or a few—that you’re looking forward to next year? Let us know in the comments below!

EGM’s Most Anticipated Games of 2013

BioShock Infinite

Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Irrational Games
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

In all honesty, we feel a little naïve for putting BioShock Infinite at the top of our list. Our expectations for the game are so ridiculously high that there’s virtually no way we won’t be at least a little disappointed once it’s finally in our hot little hands. Still, even if Infinite doesn’t manage to cure cancer, uncancel Firefly, and make us all look 15 years younger, you can bet your bacon it’ll be a breathtaking, boundary-shattering FPS that gamers will be talking about for years to come. —Josh Harmon

The Last of Us

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Naughty Dog
Platforms: PS3

I have a lot of respect for Naughty Dog’s efforts with their Uncharted series. The games are enjoyable, well-written, and Nathan Drake is easily one of my favorite male videogame characters. And yet—as much as I love those games—I think I’m far more excited for The Last of Us. The post-apocalyptic adventures of Joel and Ellie offer up a foundation for the folks at Naughty Dog to craft a tale more mature, dramatic, and emotional than any level Uncharted was ever able to reach. Plus, I mean—I love me a good “end of human civilization” story. —Eric L. Patterson

Grand Theft Auto V

Publisher: Take-Two
Developer: Rockstar Games
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

There’s no way that you can have a list about the most anticipated games of 2013 without mentioning the internet-crashing Grand Theft Auto V. The amount of hype surrounding this game is unfathomable—even people who aren’t fans of the series are getting excited. With a huge game world, three playable main characters, several mini-game activities, and a whole host of unannounced features, GTA V  looks set to easily become the new benchmark in gaming. —Matthew Bennett

South Park: The Stick of Truth

Publisher: THQ
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

It’s never easy to make a game about a licensed property, and the South Park franchise knows this first hand. But with Matt Stone and Trey Parker actually writing the script for South Park: The Stick of Truth, the game being done in the 2D style of the show, and gameplay elements from old-school turn-based RPGs incorporated, it’s hard not to think that this one will be sweeeeeet. —Ray Carsillo

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Publisher: Konami
Developer: Mercury Steam
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Like many classic franchises, the Castlevania series struggled to find relevance in the modern era until MercurySteam’s 2010 unveiling of Lords of Shadow. Blending classic characters with God of War-style gameplay, the game instantly revitalizing the brand and inspiring a second installment, cleverly entitled Lords of Shadow 2. Details are sparse at this point, but considering the surprising success of the first entry, we can’t wait to see how this hotly anticipated follow-up builds on the brand with its gripping tale of Gabriel’s struggles against the Belmont clan. —Brandon Justice
