THE BUZZ: Digital Extremes seems to be taking a practical approach in the development of its upcoming sequel to The Darkness. Monologues, a popular features from the original game that told players extra story bits between levels, are making a return. According to Seth Olshfski of 2K Games, the feature proved popular among the development crew as well, Seth had this to say;
You gotta sit there while the level loads anyway so why not, right? Bad narrative gets in the way; good narrative is additive. It’s not just about killing a dude, it’s about why you’re killing a dude.
EGM’s TAKE: We love a little context in our carnage. There’s nothing quite like knowing why you hate someone so much you need to create a black hole to decimate any hope they had at survival. I mean, it’s a black hole, what are they going to do? Circle strafe it?
