[Updated] NCAA Not Renewing Contract with EA for Football Games

Posted on July 17, 2013 AT 01:30pm

The NCAA won’t be renewing their contract with EA, making NCAA Football 14 “the last to include the NCAA’s name and logo.”

“Given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA,” the organization said in a statement issued today. “The NCAA has never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images, or likenesses to EA.”

The statement refers to the NCAA’s ongoing class-action lawsuit against several former collegiate athletes, who claim the NCAA profited of their in-game likenesses.

According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, EA will continue making college football games, but without the official NCAA license.

Update: EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson confirmed the NCAA Football franchise will continue, simply without the NCAA branding.

“This is simple: EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks,” said Wilson, executive vice president of EA Sports. “Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company is strong and we are already working on a new game for next-generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, leagues and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports.”

As per their licensing agreement, EA Tiburon can still use the college football playoff system, conference names, coach names, the Heisman Trophy, and college bowl games.
