Skyrim’s DLC Will Be Closer to Expansions

THE BUZZ: You have to hand it to the folks at Bethesda, when they do something, anything, they do it big. Not only have they created arguably the biggest game ever, they plan to follow it up with downloadable content that that could have a passing resemblance to the size of an expansion pack. DLC is frequently some new weapons, some new missions, and a few pieces of horse armor (no we will never stop pointing that out). Speaking with Kotaku at DICE last week, Todd Howard explained that while Fallout 3 had no less than five separate pieces of content, Bethesda sees Skyrim’s DLC path a bit less aggressive but by no means plans on skimping on the depth.

In a perfect world we should see less DLC for Skyrim but, as Howard points out, gamers can expect “more meat on them” adding “they’ll feel closer to an expansion pack.” With that admission it seems that we’ll see less than five pieces of DLC in our future but if we get a few more hours of gameplay out of these packages no one will complain. That’s not the entire plan though, Howard points out that his team would like to release smaller updates between the larger ones saying ,”Because that gap is going to be bigger, we want to put little things out for free in between. We’ve already done that for PC with the high-res pack. We’re trying to figure out what those things are.”

Bethesda seems committed to keeping gamers in its world, and if it keeps the content flowing gamers will happily oblige.

EGM’s TAKE: There are more than a handful of developers that get DLC right, but arguably none more so than Bethesda. The timing usually seems to be right, so no one gets their feelings hurt, the content is thick and meaty, and other than a few missteps the company has been generally perfect about giving its games legs for years. At DICE, when Bethesda showed off everything its developers had created, the very heart of the Internet was aflutter with dreams of dragon mounts and every type of arrow you can imagine. Let’s hope we’ll see some of those in the near future as well.
