Weekend Play: Ray Plays a Sports Game

Posted on August 8, 2014 AT 05:00pm

Welcome to EGM’s Weekend Play, a weekly account of what games the editors of EGM are currently playing, and an open conversation with you, the reader, about what you’ve been playing.

So, check out what we’re playing below, and then chime in with your own choices for the weekend in the comments section.

It seems somewhat fitting that the game that would break my consecutive string of weekends playing hockey would be another sports title. Yes, before all the Destiny‘s and Assassin’s Creed‘s and Call of Duty‘s of the world occupy my time in the fall (and yes, another NHL title at some point, too), Madden NFL 15 and its yearly attempt at gridiron greatness will start my warm-up for what serves as the busiest release window on the gaming calendar. I will once again look to lead my New York Giants to greatness, although I will likely never reach new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s target of 70 percent completions for Eli Manning. Instead, I will rely on my stalwart RBs and infamous Bonzai Blitz to hopefully carry the day.

I’m not sure what I read recently that stirred this impulse—a reread of God’s War by Kameron Hurley, I suspect—But I’ve the sudden desire to play Square Enix’s improved Final Fantasy Tactics translation, War of the Lions. Fortunately for me, Josh owns both a Vita and the game. Not sure why, since he’s the furthest thing from a fan of the JRPG. Perhaps Tactics‘ turn-based strategy sung to the XCOM fan in him. That and its popular status in that particular gaming space.

Either way, half my lived life later, I don’t remember a goddamn thing about Final Fantasy Tactics, but I’ve heard great things about the updated localization, so that’s a good excuse as any to return to Ivalice. Plus, this is one title I can take with me on the plane!

This weekend Chris and I will be jet-setting our way to Cologne, Germany, to cover the latest out of Gamescom 2014. That means we’ll be stuck in the air, surrounded by German people, struggling to fill 13 hours of boredom with whatever we can get our hands-on. That means handhelds are the order of the day, and I’m really hoping that I’ll finally get a chance to tear into Tearaway, the only Vita game I truly regret not yet playing. (It was that and PlayStation Vita Pets, but I recently gave that a go and it was an enormous puppy-washing disappointment.) I’ve heard that Media Molecule’s first post-LittleBigPlanet project is heartwarming and delightful, so I can’t think of a better way to take my mind off the stern, socks-and-sandals-clad Deutschlanders who’ll be undoubtedly be crowding onto my armrest as we pass over the Atlantic.

It’s serious MMO time this weekend. Since the Rakghoul event is back with a vengeance in Star Wars: The Old Republic, I’ll be spending most of my free time farming like crazy, especially seeing as I completely neglected it the last time it was live. I have so much reputation and achievements to earn between now and Tuesday. I doubt I’ll get everything done, but I plan on giving it a pretty good go.

Then there’s my other MMO obsession: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Having recently returned to the game after several months off, I’ve pretty much cleared all of the content that has released since I quit. However, I’m now into the grind-fest end game. So when I’m not in SWTOR I’ll be grinding FATEs to earn my 12 “Atma,” which are needed to upgrade the Relic weapon. If you’ve never played the game then everything I just said means nothing to you, but take it from me, it’s a lot of work.
