Weekend Play: Sidekick Show-Stealers

Welcome to EGM’s Weekend Play, a weekly account of what games the editors of EGM are currently playing, and an open conversation with you, the reader, about what you’ve been playing.

After reading what we’re playing, let us know what games you’ve been playing and what games, if any, you’ll be escaping to this weekend in the comments below!

Sorry to say, Last of Us fans, but Naughty Dog’s survival-horror adventure hasn’t infected me yet. Troy Baker connected with me far more as Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite than he does as Joel, and I’m hoping the gameplay evolves from moving planks around abandoned housing projects sometime soon. That said, I’m going to give it a fair shot—but I’m just not grabbed by these ghoulies so far.

This weekend is all about the Nintendo 3DS for me. First off, I have Animal Crossing: New Leaf. My latest obsession, I have about 60 hours into this monster time-suck as it is, and there is so much that I want to do in my town!

My museum has finally expanded, and through a concerted effort I have built my house out to its maximum size. That unlocked Theme Challenges, which I have jumped into. I have to figure out my next Public Works project, and nee to spend a little time on landscaping. Plus, Saturday is the big Bug Off event, and I have my eye set on the first place trophy (last month I didn’t pay enough attention to my battery and it died just before the end of the contest, wiping out all my progress and getting me a visit from Mr. Resetti).

If that isn’t enough, I have a copy of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team waiting to get started. I’m a huge fan of all the Mario RPGs, so I’ve been waiting for this one to hit for a while now.

The only think that makes this whole thing sad is that I will be playing these portable games from my couch since I have no plans to leave the house and venture into the stifling heat. But I suppose that’s okay. It frees up my broken television for the repair people to work on.

If I get around to playing anything this weekend, it’ll probably be Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which I just picked up on Xbox Live to tide me over until GTAV comes out. I look forward to hours of parachuting, hooker hooker murder, and Big Smoke telling me all I had to do was follow the damn train.

Eagle-eyed readers will notice I said “if” up there. That’s because this weekend is my birthday, so I might be too busy celebrating and living my exciting celebrity lifestyle to pick up the controller. In lieu of gifts, you may send your cash, check, or money order to [Ed. Note: Address removed. Don't enable him].

This weekend is all about the RPGs for me. Last week, I purchased The Witcher 2 when it was on sale for $5 on Xbox Live. And after all the first-person shooters I’ve been spending time with (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Killzone 3, Wolfenstein 3D, the list goes on), I’m ready for a change of pace.

Then there’s Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Our code came in this morning, and since I’m on point to review the game for EGM, it is both my job and my pleasure to torment Luigi in his sleep over the course of this weekend.

Of course, in between my play sessions with these two wildly different RPGs, I’ll still find the time to sneak in some Crysis 3 multiplayer matches because I might have a problem.

Again, my week is basically taken up by real-life activities, but you know me—I never miss an opportunity to play a game. After my little holiday in RIFT, I’m back to Star Wars: The Old Republic with a vengeance. I’m currently working on sorting out my main ahead of the release of Patch 2.3 and the return of the Gree event next week.

The sight of that Tauntaun mount that I spotted this morning and the new PvP Arenas that are on the way has reinvigorated my love for the game. The couple of weeks off in RIFT also helped with the burnout I was feeling. I honestly don’t care how BioWare want me to obtain that mount, be it Cartel Coins, a quest, hand-rearing the thing, or by traveling to their office and reciting the Sith code while dressed as a Wookie, it shall be mine!
