WWE ’12 Roster Revealed at Summerslam Axxess 2011 in L.A.

Business is about to pick up

It is one of the WWE’s four crown jewels of Pay-Per-View along with Wrestlemania, Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series. It has seen champions crowned, legends made, and wrestling history is a near guarantee of occurring at each one. Of course, I am talking about Summerslam and this year it took place in beautiful downtown Los Angeles.

But while the crowd was chanting for ice cream bars and asking CM Punk who his favorite comic book writer was (Ed Brubaker by the way, very solid choice) as they showed him support in his bid to become the unified WWE Champion during the traditional WWE Axxess event the day before Summerslam, those of us here at EGM were involved in an even bigger event: the revelation of the WWE ‘12 roster.

WWE ‘12 is the revamped Smackdown vs Raw video game franchise that WWE has been putting out there for the better part of a decade now, but with the recent decision behind the scenes to start unifying the brands again, it only made sense that this would be a perfect opportunity to revamp the video game franchise as well.

A new submission system, a chance for dynamic comebacks that can turn the tide of any match, and the new Predator game play system, named such for WWE ‘12 cover boy Randy Orton, which is a revolutionary new in-ring physics system, are just the tip of the iceberg. A lot of fan favorites like online Royal Rumble and the WWE Universe mode are also coming back and seeing some upgrades to make this the most comprehensive WWE game to date.

But a large part of any fighting game, with the WWE franchise included, is the rosters. With WWE laying off a good amount of people the week before Summerslam it would be interesting to see if anyone from the departing cast were able to make it into the game, not to mention the always popular WWE Legends. So, without further ado, here is the current 62-man (and woman) roster for WWE 12.

  • Alberto Del Rio
  • John Morrison
  • Dolph Ziggler
  • Edge
  • Alex Riley
  • Ted DiBiase
  • Chavo Guerrero
  • Sin Cara
  • Christian
  • Mark Henry
  • Drew McIntyre
  • Mr. McMahon
  • John Cena
  • William Regal
  • Ezekiel Jackson
  • Cody Rhodes
  • Kelly Kelly
  • Husky Harris
  • Justin Gabriel
  • Sheamus
  • Layla
  • Daniel Bryan
  • Heath Slater
  • Vader
  • Maryse
  • Tyson Kidd
  • Michelle McCool
  • Jack Swagger
  • Natalya
  • Vladimir Kozlov
  • Beth Phoenix
  • David Otunga
  • R-Truth
  • Santino Marella
  • Arn Anderson
  • Randy Orton
  • Evan Bourne
  • Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat
  • Rey Mysterio
  • Goldust
  • Road Warrior Hawk
  • The Miz
  • Mason Ryan
  • Road Warrior Animal
  • Undertaker
  • McGillicutty
  • Kevin Nash
  • Wade Barrett
  • Yoshi Tatsu
  • Booker T
  • Zack Ryder
  • Eve
  • Stone Cold Steve Austin
  • CM Punk
  • Kane
  • Ax
  • The Rock
  • Big Show
  • Smash
  • HHH
  • Kofi Kingston
  • Eddie Guerrero

Most of these names in terms of legends and current WWE members are expected, but there are a few surprises that caught my eye. The first is Vladimir Kozlov as he was one of the wrestlers cut on August 5th by the WWE, but THQ Game Designer Bryan Williams has gone on record saying that Kozlov will remain in the game. Another surprise was Vader. Although I was a huge fan growing up, I didn’t know if he’d have the fan support from the WWE Universe to warrant his inclusion in this year’s title. It was also nice to see THQ quickly confirm and add Kevin Nash to the roster after his reveal at Summerslam that cost CM Punk the title and bestowed it upon Alberto Del Rio.

Aside from that, the roster is also going to include somewhere around 15 DLC wrestlers that will be released at a further date. The only confirmed one we have is Jerry Lawler, who confirmed that fact himself during the roster reveal that he would take place in the in-ring antics, while also still doing color commentary with Michael Cole returning to do play-by-play. Maybe we can hope for a Jim Ross play-by-play DLC in the future as well.

Another sticking point of many fighting game rosters is character ratings. For WWE ’12 The Rock tops the scales at a 96 and The Miz (@mikethemiz), who makes sure to voice his displeasure to WWE ’12 Creative Director Cory Ledesma (@realcoryledesma) every chance he gets on Twitter when he sees something he doesn’t like about the game, has his highest rating yet with a 90. But Miz isn’t the only one who complained about his rating as we caught up with R-Truth.

“I’m represented pretty well. I’ve heard I’m at an 85 right now in the game, but we need 100. R-Truth not having a 100 is a big conspiracy. Little Jimmy’s dad, Big Jimmy, is in charge of that conspiracy and we need to put a stop to it. John Cena’s probably working with Big Jimmy’s dad on that one too.”

It wasn’t the first time John Cena came up in conversation that night. For a variety of reasons, all the male wrestlers at the roster reveal event, R-Truth, Alex Riley, Zack Ryder, Randy Orton, Alberto del Rio, and Wade Barrett, mentioned that John Cena was their favorite wrestler to beat up on in the game. I guess there are a lot of people who don’t like Fruity Pebbles in the WWE.

Anyway you look at it though, whether you’re a Little Jimmy new to the series or you’re a wily old wrestling veteran and you always think “it’s time to play the game” like HHH, WWE ’12 is shaping up to the be the biggest and best wrestling game we’ve seen to date.

WWE 12 is slated to be released November 22, 2011, on PS3, XBox 360, and Nintendo Wii. Of the entire roster revealed, who are you disappointed didn’t make the legends cut? Do you think we may see them as DLC? Sound off below!
