Sea of Thieves 2022 plans include Adventures, Mysteries, Sea Forts, and more

Rare recently held its 2022 Preview Event for Sea of Thieves in which the developer revealed its future plans for the game.

First up is the introduction of two new story-focused events known as Adventures and Mysteries. Adventures are time-limited content that will drop on a monthly schedule and last around two to three weeks. Each Adventure will form a chapter in an overarching story and feature cinematics. The first of these Adventures, titled Shrouded Islands, is scheduled to arrive on February 17th.

While Mysteries will run alongside Adventures and require “the community to solve clues and riddles both inside and outside the game to move the story forward.” The first Mystery will see players attempting to solve a murder, according to the developer.

Looking forward, Season Six of Sea of Thieves gets underway in March and brings with it a new activity for players in the form of Sea Forts. Six of these Sea Forts have appeared from the Sea of the Damned and require players to battle against Phantoms to collect keys and claim the treasure within.

Later in Season 6, Pirate Legends will be getting something new with a Legend-exclusive Voyage. This Voyage is said to be “packed with story beats and a series of challenges that change each time you set sail.” More information will be shared at a later date.

Finally, Rare announced that it is removing Arena mode from the game “within the next few months.” According to the developer, the decision has been made due to having to maintain QA and bug fixes for both modes becoming something the team “can no longer justify.”

“With the scope of Sea of Thieves growing larger and larger, the huge task of maintaining QA and bug fixes for both Adventure and Arena modes has become something we can no longer justify,” executive producer Joe Neate explained in an Xbox Wire post. We’re proud of what we achieved with Arena, but ultimately it wasn’t as successful as we had hoped, and a bespoke competitive mode with few dedicated players is hard to align with our future vision for Sea of Thieves.”

Sea of Thieves is available now on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
