Awesomenauts Review: Multiplayer Online Battle Madness

Awesomenauts Review
Awesomenauts is a 2D Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game developed in the style of the early 90s’ cartoons with a cheesy, awesome rock theme song and all. So the question is; is this the 2D League of Legends or just a highly stylized MOBA made for consoles?

From a gameplay standpoint Awesomenauts is pretty simple; both teams have a base guarded by turrets and constantly spawning robots. Your goal as the player is to get past the other players and their robots while using your robots to blow up their turrets and base while guarding your own. There are six different characters to choose from all with unique abilities with all different ways to play. These characters all have a list of abilities you choose before the match and you them in-game as you earn the in-game currency, solar. Some characters are locked away until you rank up. What makes the gameplay great is just how it takes all these elements and balances them perfectly.

The game does not have a story mode, but it does have a practice mode for those who don’t want to deal with online competition or are just in the mood to practice. As a whole, the gameplay is balanced, competitive, and fun, but very team-based and not really for solo players offline or online.

On the presentation front, Awesomenauts is not super technically impressive, but the art is great. The game looks just like a 90s cartoon similar to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or G.I. Joe. The music is solid, but nothing spectacular. Though I must say the unique songs for each character when you select them or when you get a killing spree are funny and pretty catchy and I have had the damn theme song stuck in my head all week. The sound effects fit the game as a whole even though most of them didn’t jump out to me.

As a whole, Awesomenauts is not the most in-depth or amazing experience. What Awesomenauts does well is being a fun competitive muliplayer game that has a lot of style and no glaring flaws. If you are looking for a low price, balanced, fun game to play with friends, Awesomenauts is a solid option, but solo players beware.

Final Score: 7.5/10
