Kingdom Hearts III is finally here, and while some copies have already leaked into the wild, Square Enix is doing its best to keep some of the game’s biggest secrets out of public view. In fact, they won’t be added to the game at all until after Kingdom Hearts III‘s release date.
Players who buy Kingdom Hearts III at launch will see three updates in the first week. The first arrives on launch day, January 29th, and adds a Memory Archive to the game. This will let players view a synopsis of the Kingdom Hearts series to try and help them get caught up. The second launches on January 30th, and consists of an epilogue video. Players will need to have completed the game and seen the main ending in order to view the epilogue. The third and final update will arrive on January 31st, adding a “secret movie” to the game, with currently-unknown criteria to unlock it.

For most players, this staggered release shouldn’t affect their playthroughs of the game. It’s unlikely that most players will have beaten the entire game in one day, for example, so the epilogue video should arrive in-game well before most players get to that point. Likewise, the “secret movie” seems akin to the secret endings of past Kingdom Hearts games, most of which required some extra effort—like beating the game on Proud mode or finding every treasure and secret in the game—to unlock. Only a handful of players, if any, will be at that point by January 31st.
Some of Square Enix’s caution may be well-warranted, since copies of the game have already leaked into the wild. At the moment, nobody can spoil the final cutscenes or secrets in the game, since those leaked copies literally don’t include them on the disc.
Kingdom Hearts III launches on Janaury 29th for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
